Over 100 Companies Urge AI Cybersecurity Defense

Over 100 companies, including OpenAI and Google, call for enhanced cybersecurity against AI threats.

More than 100 tech companies and AI startups, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft, have signed an open letter advocating for increased cybersecurity protection against AI-driven threats. The group, which also includes prominent cyber firms like CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, as well as financial institutions and internet infrastructure firms, warns that AI-enabled cyberattacks could become more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months. They emphasize the risk to critical public services and infrastructure, such as hospitals and water treatment plants.

The letter highlights recent incidents where AI agents have reportedly attacked companies, including the Hugging Face incident involving an OpenAI agent and other reported break-ins involving agents from Anthropic and Meta. These events underscore a fundamental shift in cybersecurity, necessitating new commercial solutions. The signatories are calling for a "collective response" and the formation of "new partnerships" to elevate security standards and address emerging cyber threats.

While some of the signing AI companies are actively developing advanced AI models, they are also offering programs for defensive uses of frontier AI models. Examples include OpenAI’s Daybreak program, Anthropic’s Mythos, and Microsoft’s new cyber platform Perception. The initiative urges collaboration among governments at local, national, and international levels to strengthen security measures.
