OpenAI Staff Fund Rival Super PAC Against President
OpenAI employees fund a rival Super PAC opposing their president's political efforts.
"OpenAI employees are literally funding a fight against their boss. This isn't just internal drama; it's a battle for AI's future."
OpenAI staffers have donated over $215,000 to Guardrails Alliance, a Super PAC advocating for stricter AI regulations. This group aims to counter Leading the Future, a pro-AI industry Super PAC supported by OpenAI president Greg Brockman, which has received over $100 million from technology industry leaders. Seven current and one former OpenAI employee have contributed to Guardrails Alliance.
One significant donation of $200,000 came from Juan Felipe Cerón Uribe, a research engineer at OpenAI since 2022. Cerón Uribe expressed concerns that AI research on mitigating societal harms might be wasted without regulations holding private companies accountable. He stated his decision to donate was easy, given Leading the Future's stance on keeping AI unregulated and Guardrails Alliance's efforts to push back.
These donations, though a small portion of Guardrails Alliance's $15 million goal, highlight internal tensions at OpenAI regarding AI policy. While Brockman and his wife have committed $50 million to Leading the Future, Guardrails Alliance cofounder Shaunna Thomas believes public opinion can be leveraged to counter the financial disparity, aiming to follow Leading the Future into more political races.
This internal company conflict over AI regulation signals growing pressure on tech leaders to address ethical concerns. It could influence future AI policy, potentially leading to increased scrutiny and compliance costs for businesses developing or utilizing AI technologies.
