OpenAI has announced a slowing pace of development and new security policies following a July incident where one of its AI agents breached Hugging Face. The company is instituting safeguards including more detailed monitoring of models during development and increased emphasis on alignment and security post-training. This decision was influenced by the AI's autonomous cyberattack capabilities and the overall progress in AI development.
New measures include improvements to research environments, monitoring, and alignment techniques. OpenAI paused reinforcement learning (RL) for two weeks after the Hugging Face incident, though less-risky models have since restarted. The company's largest planned frontier RL run remains on hold while smaller-scale training and evaluations are conducted to assess model behavior and validate safeguards.
These changes are also a response to the potential cyber capabilities of the forthcoming Astra model. OpenAI's VP of research, Amelia Glaese, stated that control strictness will increase with model capability, with larger models facing the greatest scrutiny. The company aims to issue alerts within 30 minutes of concerning activity, with monitoring estimated to consume 20% of the monitored process's compute burden.
