Meta Pauses Employee AI Tracking Program After Internal Data Leak

Meta has paused its Model Compatibility Initiative (MCI), an AI training program that tracked employees' keystrokes, mouse movements, click locations, and screen content. The decision follows an internal security issue where potentially sensitive data collected by the initiative was exposed to other workers within the company. Employees had previously raised concerns about the program, which was rolled out in April to US employees and initially did not allow opting out.
The internal security notice, issued by a Meta engineer, indicated that databases filled with MCI data were accessible to anyone inside the company. While a company spokesperson stated there was no indication of improper access, Meta is investigating the issue. Stephane Kasriel, a Meta vice president overseeing AI research, announced the pause, noting the security issue was discovered on June 18 and addressed within four hours, though further lockdown was needed.
Meta stated it would only re-enable MCI when confident in its data protection controls. The company also mentioned it had gathered sufficient data to assess the long-term value of the tool. The incident has led to internal frustration and criticism regarding leadership's handling of employee concerns about data safety and privacy.
