Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth acknowledged that the company's AI reorganization was 'atrocious' in an internal memo. He promised employees improved stability, better communication, and the return of workplace perks to boost morale. This admission follows reports of widespread dissatisfaction within the Applied AI engineering unit, which was formed in March and comprises approximately 6,500 engineers and product managers.
Bosworth's comments addressed employee feedback, stating that Meta had 'undermined the trust' employees had in their value and career growth. He also noted that the management structure providing stability was 'shook up' amidst rapid strategic changes. Other executives, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg, have also posted internal messages acknowledging employee concerns and pledging changes.
Going forward, Meta plans to cap managers at around 20 direct reports and limit the frequency of manager changes during restructurings. Managers will primarily focus on management, and employees will have access to 'AI coaching' tools. Maher Saba, a vice president leading the Applied AI team, also indicated that employees previously forced to join the team can now seek other roles within Meta.
This internal admission by a senior executive highlights the challenges large organizations face during significant internal restructuring, especially in rapidly evolving fields like AI.
