WeatherNext can predict a storm’s track and intensity using lower-resolution weather data, offering forecasters an average of one day more lead time than existing models. This means its predictions three days out are as accurate as previous models’ predictions two days out. Researchers do not yet fully understand how the model achieves this accuracy with lower-resolution data.
The open-sourcing of WeatherNext aims to assist in better preparation for hurricanes. The model has shown a breakthrough in forecasting cyclones, as highlighted by DeepMind and blog.google, and is expected to help with earlier warnings.
