Google Launches Cheaper Gemini Flash AI Models
Google released three new Gemini Flash models, including a cheaper AI cybersecurity model.
"Google's new Flash models are all about making AI cheaper and faster. But where's the Pro version? Still waiting on that one."
Google launched three new Gemini models: Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber. Gemini 3.6 Flash is described as a "workhorse model" with improved capabilities in coding, knowledge work, and multimodal performance, and it reduces token usage by up to 17% compared to its predecessor. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is the most cost-effective model in its class, while Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber is a specialized model for finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
The 3.5 Flash Cyber model is specifically designed to be a "cost-efficient and highly capable alternative" to larger, more expensive security models. It will be available exclusively to governments and trusted partners through a limited access pilot program. Google states that the focus of these releases is to provide efficiency, latency, and reliability for customers developing AI agents at scale.
Notably, the launch did not include the anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro update. Gemini Pro models typically offer Google's highest capabilities for complex reasoning and coding, whereas Flash models prioritize lower cost and faster response times for production applications.
The introduction of cheaper and more efficient AI models, especially for cybersecurity, can significantly reduce operational costs and enhance security for businesses. This allows companies to deploy AI solutions more broadly and access specialized tools for vulnerability detection at a lower price point.
