CNN Sues Perplexity AI Over 17,000 Scraped Stories

CNN filed suit against Perplexity AI in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on May 28, 2026, alleging the AI search startup scraped more than 17,000 CNN stories, photos, and videos to train its products and generate real-time responses — without authorization. The case is Cable News Network Inc. v. Perplexity AI, Inc., 1:26-cv-04427.
CNN had previously attempted to negotiate a content licensing deal with Perplexity but the two parties failed to agree on terms. Perplexity spokesperson Jesse Dwyer pushed back with a blunt defense: 'You can't copyright facts.' The lawsuit alleges Perplexity knowingly operated without permission. CNN joins a growing legal coalition including The New York Times, News Corp, Encyclopedia Britannica, and Merriam-Webster in suing the company. News Corp is seeking up to $150,000 per violation.
The AI content licensing war is escalating fast. Anthropic recently settled a class-action with authors for a reported $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, publishers including TIME, Gannett, Le Monde, and Der Spiegel have chosen the deal route with Perplexity.
