Apple Tightens Mac Data Controls Against AI Agent Risks
Apple is tightening macOS 'Full Disk Access' controls due to risks from AI agents.
"Apple's locking down Mac data. AI agents are getting too nosy, so they're making you explicitly agree to full disk access. Smart move."
Apple is implementing new controls for macOS's 'Full Disk Access' permission, citing increased risks posed by AI agents. The company stated that increasingly capable AI agents make broad access to users' files, messages, mail, and browsing history more hazardous. This move aims to ensure that users granting an application this level of access do so with explicit action and understanding of the implications.
The decision comes as Apple acknowledges that some developers are utilizing Full Disk Access in ways that could expose users to risk, potentially without their full knowledge. While Full Disk Access was initially designed to facilitate backups, Apple now emphasizes that the extraordinary level of access it provides to applications, including files, mail, messages, and browsing history, requires greater scrutiny.
Apple's action marks the first OS-level move specifically targeting AI agent risks. The company is committed to ensuring users clearly understand these risks before granting such access, enabling them to make informed decisions about their data and privacy as AI agents become more capable and autonomous.
This development highlights growing concerns about data privacy and security in the age of AI. Businesses developing or utilizing AI agents on macOS must be aware of these new controls and ensure their applications comply with Apple's updated guidelines to maintain user trust and avoid potential security vulnerabilities.
