Anthropic to Watermark AI Content for EU Compliance
Anthropic will watermark AI-generated text and files from its models, including Claude, to comply with EU regulations.
"AI content just got a digital fingerprint. Anthropic's watermarks mean no more hiding AI-generated text. Get ready for more transparency."
Anthropic has announced it will implement watermarking for text and files generated by its AI models, including Claude. This move is in response to the EU AI Act’s Transparency Code, which became effective on August 2 and mandates that AI companies mark AI-generated or edited content for identification by other systems. The company stated that all models released after August 2 will automatically include this watermarking technology.
For files, Anthropic will utilize the C2PA open standard. The company also confirmed that support for watermarking will be extended to older models. The watermark is designed to persist even when text is copied and pasted, and through some editing, as it is embedded at the model level across all Claude products. This initiative aims to ensure transparency regarding AI-generated content.
This development is part of a broader industry trend where platforms are increasingly adopting watermarking to address user concerns and regulatory scrutiny. Other companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Synthesia, have also committed to adhering to the EU’s code, indicating a growing industry-wide effort to identify AI-generated content.
This development signals a growing regulatory environment for AI content, impacting how businesses create and verify digital assets. Companies using AI for content generation must now consider the traceability and transparency of their output to comply with evolving standards and maintain trust.
