A federal judge has granted final approval to Anthropic's $1.5 billion class action settlement with authors and publishers. The settlement addresses accusations that Anthropic trained its AI models on copyrighted books. Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín signed off on the settlement on Monday, following a preliminary approval last year by Judge William Alsup.
The settlement, reportedly the largest copyright class action settlement in history, resolves one case but does not fully address the broader issue of using copyrighted works to train AI models. The payout will deliver $3,000 per work across an estimated 500,000 works. The initial ruling by Judge Alsup stated that training an AI model on copyrighted text counts as fair use, but found Anthropic's method of obtaining some books from pirate sites to be illegal.
This approval closes the specific case against Anthropic, but the legal question surrounding AI training on copyrighted material remains open. Other judges are free to reach different conclusions, and a string of similar copyright lawsuits against companies like Google, Meta, Midjourney, and OpenAI are ongoing.
