Anthropic in Talks With Samsung for Custom AI Chip

Anthropic is reportedly in discussions with Samsung to manufacture a custom AI chip.

Anthropic is in talks with Samsung regarding the manufacturing of a new custom AI chip. This development comes after previous reports indicated Anthropic's interest in producing its own AI chips to address potential shortages. While discussions are underway, Anthropic has not yet determined the chip's specific use, its integration into servers, or its power specifications.

This move by Anthropic follows a similar announcement from OpenAI, which recently partnered with Broadcom to introduce its own custom-built inference processor, named “Jalapeño.” OpenAI claims its chip offers improved efficiency and better performance-per-watt compared to other competitor chips. Amazon and Google also provide custom-built TPUs as part of their cloud services. Samsung is an established partner in the AI industry, collaborating with Nvidia to produce chips for AI model training and operation, and is also working with Nvidia on an AI chip factory in South Korea.

Anthropic has stated that a diversified hardware stack, including chips from Google, Amazon, and Nvidia, remains crucial to its compute strategy. The company declined to provide further comment on a potential partnership with Samsung. This initiative by AI companies to develop custom chips aims to create specialized hardware for specific compute tasks and reduce reliance on dominant chip manufacturers.
